More Than a Coffee Shop: The Community Behind Imagine Studio Cafe

The entrance and patio of a cafe with lots of plants

If you haven’t been to Imagine Café yet, it’s one of those places you don’t realize you’re missing until you’ve actually spent time there. Tucked into James Bay, it’s become a real part of the neighbourhood, not just somewhere people stop once, but somewhere they return to. You start to notice familiar faces, people settling into their usual tables, and that quiet rhythm of a place locals clearly rely on.

What makes that even more meaningful is what’s happening behind it. Imagine Café is a not-for-profit teaching café they create a space where young adults can build confidence, gain real experience, and work toward what comes next. It’s something we really value, and a big part of why we’re proud to partner with them. It also means that every visit is supporting something bigger, not just a café, but a place that’s actively helping people build for their future. That purpose doesn’t take away from the experience; if anything, it’s part of what makes being there feel so good.

At the same time, it’s simply a really good place to go. The food is thoughtful without being overcomplicated, with fresh pastries, bannock, and house-made bread alongside breakfast options, soups, salads, and sandwiches that make it easy to stay a little longer than planned. One of the standout details is the pizza oven — a real one, turning out fresh pizzas right in the space — and it’s something people don’t always expect, but quickly remember.

There’s also a sense that Imagine Café is always evolving. From community events to catering and being part of local tours, it continues to find ways to stay connected to the people around it. It doesn’t feel static — it feels like something growing alongside the community it’s so deeply ingrained in.

More than anything, though, it’s the feeling you get when you’re there. Sitting inside or out on the covered patio, watching people come and go, it’s easy to understand why this place matters to so many. A lot of that comes from Dorothy, the owner, whose care for the space and the people in it is something you can genuinely feel.

That’s exactly why it’s one of the stops we include on our Bites & Sights tour. If you haven’t been yet, you’re not just missing out on a good meal or a nice place to sit — you’re missing out on a place that’s become a meaningful part of Victoria.
